[Satellite Today 12-03-08] Khrunichev has lost the Kazsat-1 satellite, the head of the Russian national space agency, Talgat Musabayev, announced to Russian press officials Dec. 2.
“The KazSat-1 satellite went completely out of control on Nov. 26 and has not responded to any commands. That’s it. It’s gone,” he said.
According to a report in RIA Novosti, the $65 million satellite, placed in orbit in June 2006, stopped broadcasting to the country’s territory in June.
Khrunichev developed the KazSat-1 under a contract with the Kazakhstan government. The company is building a second satellite for Kazakhstan, KazSat-2, in cooperation with Russian and foreign companies, including the Russian Institute of Space Engineering and Alcatel Alenia Space.
KazSat-2 is scheduled for launch in 2009.
