[Satellite Today  07-03-07] Italian satellite operator Telespazio unveiled the details of a demonstration of a satellite-based system designed to manage humanitarian rescue operations in the case of natural disasters.
The test of the LIMES (Land and Sea Integrated Monitoring for European Security) was conducted in mid-June in Cyprus in partnership with the German and Cypriot civil protection agencies. The aim was to test and evaluate the benefits of using satellite-based systems to provide rapid mapping and navigation services. The test also involved the European Union Monitoring and Information Centre in Brussels and the participation of the Italian Civil Protection Agency.
LIMES, initiated in December 2006, is co-funded by the European Commission within the 6° Framework Program–Aeronautics & Space/GMES Security. The goal of the project, which runs through 2010 and includes about 50 partners, is to supplement the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) program by applying innovative solutions based on Earth observation systems and satellite communication and positioning technologies.
