[10-29-07 – Satellite Today] EMS Technologies Inc. and Windmill International have turned their portable Global Broadcast Service (GBS) Receive Suite over to the military for evaluation, EMS announced Oct. 29.
The suite is designed to deliver the equivalent of 19 T1 lines, or 29 megabits per second of data. The system, developed under the Small Business Innovation Research program, weighs less than 40 pounds when fielded, 85 percent less than the current GBS system, the companies said.
"The receive suite is ideal for mobile forces who need to set up their communications infrastructure and tear it down quickly,” David Martin, vice president, product development for Windmill, said in a statement. “A small form-factor was a critical design requirement, and EMS’s slot-array technology was crucial to system success — it allows the system to collect the maximum amount of energy in the smallest amount of space while keeping the antenna’s weight to a minimum.”
