[8-30-07 – Satellite News Today] DRS Technologies Inc. received a contract from the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) to provide communications services for deployed military personnel, the company announced Aug. 29.

Under the $50 million contract, DRS will provide a satellite-based internet-broadband and Voice Over Internet Protocol network for use by personnel deployed by U.S. European Command, Central Command, Pacific Command and African Command. DRS will support the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Network in Iraq and Afghanistan, which provides phone service, e-mail, Internet access and video chat between service members and their families.

The work will be performed by Dulles, Va.-based DRS Technical Services, which will be responsible for all network engineering, systems integration, installation and testing as well as ensuring connectivity. 
The contract includes options which could bring the total value of the contract to $250 million.
