[8-27-07 – Satellite Today] SpaceDev has been awarded a contract to build a prototype lunar landing vehicle for the International Lunar Observatory Association, the company announced Aug. 23.
The spacecraft will conduct optical and radio astronomy from the surface of the moon as well as potentially engaging in commercial activities such as photography, communications and internet hosting.
SpaceDev has completed four design and feasibility studies that addressed various aspects of the lander since 200 and said the prototype will achieve smooth landings using a precision-controlled throttling of its hybrid rocket motors.
"This is a landmark phase for the [Association], as we carry the project beyond paper studies and into hardware development," Mark Sirangelo, Spacedev’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement. "We believe that low-cost entrepreneurial endeavors will play an increasing role in space science, travel and exploration, and we are excited to be part of that movement with our work on the [lander]. This phase will demonstrate critical technologies, and will provide a perfect stepping stone toward further advancement of the mission."
