[8-27-07 – Satellite Today] Boeing and Lockheed Martin have submitted their proposals for the U.S. Air Force’s GPS 3 program, the companies announced Aug. 27.

The contract is scheduled to be awarded by the Global Positioning Systems Wing, Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif., before the end of the year.  The multi-billion dollar contract, will include eight GPS 3A satellites, the first of which will be launched in 2013, as well as 8 3B spacecraft and 16 3C satellites.

The next-generation GPS spacecraft will provide improved position, navigation and timing services to warfighters and civilian users.
