German wildfire-detection startup OroraTech raised 25 million euros ($27 million) in a Series B funding round to build out its predictive AI capabilities and orbital sensor network. OroraTech announced the round on Tuesday, led by Korys, the European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), and long-standing investor Bayern Kapital.

Other existing investors Edaphon, Ananda Impact Ventures, ConActivity, and Findus Venture invested in the round as well.

The company plans to use the funds to expand its footprint in North America and the Asia Pacific region, key markets for wildfire management, along with enhancements in its technology to improve its wildfire detection.

OroraTech currently operates two thermal satellites. Its first thermal-infrared camera, FOREST-1, was launched on a nanosatellite in January 2022 and FOREST-2 in May 2023. Its next-generation satellite FOREST-3 is scheduled for launch in early 2025, and its first plane of eight satellites is planned for mid-2025.

Data from the satellites informs its Wildfire Intelligence Solution, which the company reports is used to combat wildfires by more than 90 customers including public sector, forestry, and insurers across six continents.

“OroraTech stands as one of the most dynamic spacetech pioneers in Germany. Since our investment in 2021, the company has not only strengthened its foundation but has also expanded its global footprint,” says Monika Steger, managing director of Bayern Kapital. “Supporting OroraTech’s mission to deliver cutting-edge wildfire and thermal intelligence for a sustainable future is a source of pride for us.”
