Privateer, a space data company started by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, acquired Earth observation (EO) analytics company Orbital Insight in a deal announced May 6. Privateer pitched the acquisition as a way to “make space data and Earth insights more powerful and accessible than ever.”
Privateer said that Orbital Insight’s TerraScope analytics platform will be integrated with Privateer’s Wayfinder data engine, to bring together data and intelligence across all domains, from sea to space. Wayfinder is an open-access and near real-time visualization of satellites and debris in Earth orbit.
TerraScope, formerly called Orbital Insight GO, is Orbital Insight’s geospatial intelligence platform that integrates proprietary and publicly available data sources. It serves use cases such as supply chain monitoring, real estate due diligence, and GIS mapping. Orbital Insights customers include Mitsubishi, RBC Capital Markets, and the U.S. Air Force.
Privateeer’s mission is to create the “data infrastructure that will enable sustainable growth for the new space economy,” to help operators maneuver safely as space becomes more congested.
Reuters broke the news, also reporting that Privateer also raised $56.5 million in a Series A funding round.
