Inmarsat reported a strong increase in demand for its data services at sea, which helped its maritime data division revenues improve by more than 25 percent during its latest quarter to reach $85.4 million.
The maritime growth offset falling revenues in Inmarsat’s maritime voice division, where revenues were down 9.3 percent from last year to reacg $19.6 million.
“We are now a data service company – 85 percent of our revenues come from data. People are moving from voice to email and text – these aren’t trends that are unusual – and we are very well positioned," Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pearce said in a statement.
Inmarsat’s overall revenues, however, fell 10.5 percent year-over-year to $325.9 million, due to its investment in bankrupt 4G wireless company LightSquared, which filed for protection after failing to reach an agreement with creditors over $1.6 billion of debt.
