BridgeComm reports that it has demonstrated high-speed optical communications of speeds beyond 100 Gb per second in a lab setting. The company announced Thursday that it will hold point-to-point demonstrations of the technology in North Carolina next week.
BridgeComm said this Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) technology can meet demands for fast and secure point-to-point data transmission in areas where fiber is not available, and without the compromises of Radio Frequency (RF) communications.
The company has worked with Nokia network equipment and services backed by Nokia Bell Labs on this technology. Nokia and BridgeComm are working to construct and operate a private wireless network based on standardized 3GPP architectures.
“RF and fiber are technologies that have served us well, evolving to meet the increasing demands for higher performance within any mobile communications system, though they come with physical limitations for speed and capacity,” said Barry Matsumori, CEO of BridgeComm. “OWC addresses the needs of end users, while complimenting RF with point to multipoint capability, throughput to support thousands of aggregate users, with inherent interference mitigation.”
