Turkcell, one of Turkey’s largest cellular operators, has stepped up its plans in the satellite-direct-to-device (D2D) arena. It is one of a number of mobile operators looking into the potential of D2D and how it could fit into its overall roadmap. It has conducted a successful test using Lynk Global’s technology, the two companies announced March 25.
In collaboration with Lynk, Turkcell conducted what is claimed to be Turkey’s first field tests of D2D technology, which enables mobile services — including SMS, voice, and mobile data — directly to standard mobile phones via Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The tests conducted in a rural area near Konya, Turkey, utilized Turkcell’s mobile frequencies and Lynk’s satellites to provide SMS exchanges and voice calls using commercial cell phones.
Lynk and Turkcell previously announced an agreement to complement network resiliency and mobile coverage with D2D in February 2024.
“We are thrilled to add Turkey to the growing list of countries where Lynk has showcased its patented and proven technology. Along with Turkcell, Lynk is committed to enhancing connectivity across rural areas in Türkiye, including in emergencies when terrestrial networks are temporarily inoperable,” Ramu Potarazu, CEO of Lynk, said in a statement.
Earlier this month, SES announced a strategic investment in Lynk to become a channel partner to allow government, mobile network operator (MNO) and automotive customers to access Lynk’s D2D network.
