The EchoStar EM2050 satellite IoT module.

EchoStar Mobile, a subsidiary of EchoStar, is working with IoT startup Connected on a new IoT solution for connectivity in remote areas. The companies announced a deal on Tuesday to launch Connected One, a personal communication device that uses EchoStar’s satellite technology to connect people off the grid.

Under a new three-year agreement, EchoStar Mobile will supply its EM2050 satellite IoT modules to Connected. This will bring satellite connectivity to Connected One, a portable device that can connects via Bluetooth and turns any smartphone into a satellite communication tool. The EM2050 modules utilize LoRa technology and operate in S-band spectrum.

Connected is based in Portugal and is launching the device in Europe with coverage from the EchoStar XXI satellite formerly known as TerreStar 2. The company plans to expand service to the U.S. by the end of this year. The service is intended for emergency alerts, satellite messaging, and location tracking in remote locations.

“Our mission at Connected has always been to enhance the accessibility and reliability of basic connectivity, especially in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking,” said Tiago Rebelo, co-founder and CEO at Connected. “Our partnership with EchoStar Mobile enables us to integrate their robust geostationary satellite network coverage into our Connected One device, providing a reliable solution for maintaining connectivity off-grid, across Europe and soon in the U.S.”
