IoT provider Soracom has integrated Skylo’s satellite connectivity in its IoT network. Qualified customers around the world can now activate Skylo connectivity on their Soracom SIMs/eSIMs to allow the devices to switch between cellular and non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity.
Soracom CTO and co-founder Kenta Yasukawa announced the update at Soracom Discovery 2024 Japanese IoT conference this week. The solution has advanced from private beta status to global initial service rollout. Soracom and Skylo first struck a partnership to work together last year. Soracom is also working with satellite IoT company Astrocast.
Skylo’s satellite NTN solution allows chipsets, modems, modules, and devices designed for terrestrial networks to connect via existing satellites using the global 3GPP Release 17 standard. Soracom said the Soracom’s platform services let customers minimize the amount of data transmitted over the satellite link to maximize coverage.
“Soracom is committed to an Internet of Things without limits, where anything can connect to any cloud from anywhere,” Soracom CTO Yasukawa said. “Now, customers can add Skylo’s breakthrough 3GPP NTN coverage to their devices while still taking full advantage of Soracom’s connectivity management platform to control their connections, cloud integrations, and data use.”
