IoT provider emnify has signed a deal for satellite capacity with Lynk to enable IoT service. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, emnify customers will now be able to leverage their existing GSM or LTE cellular radio device to connect to Lynk’s “cell tower” satellites.
emnify operates the IoT SuperNetwork which connects millions of IoT devices from electric vehicles to energy meters, alarm systems to GPS trackers, thermometers to health wearables. This partnership will extend emnify’s global coverage beyond terrestrial mobile networks into international maritime waters. The two companies plan to launch service in the second half of 2023.
Lynk CEO and co-founder Charles Miller said Lynk’s satellite-based service will provide ubiquitous messaging with existing GSM or LTE radio user equipment.
“This partnership marks the future of IoT connectivity, where satellite and terrestrial mobile communications systems work seamlessly together to provide more resilient, accessible, and flexible connectivity solutions,” said Alexander Schebler, VP of Network Access at emnify, citing use cases like environmental monitoring, fish farming, and asset tracking in offshore locations.
