DISH Network is providing its entire portfolio of 600 MHz spectrum to T-Mobile at no cost for 60 days, the company announced Monday, in response to the spread of COVID-19. DISH said its 600 MHz spectrum will enhance T-Mobile’s network nationwide as wireless customers are increasing their work and personal use.
“DISH is proud to support Americans’ personal and professional connectivity needs during this challenging time,” Jeff Blum, DISH senior vice president of Public Policy and Government Affairs said. “As we take this step, we’d like to thank the FCC for their leadership on the technological needs arising as a result of the virus, including the increased need for broadband access to help consumers respond to the impact of COVID-19 on daily life.”
On Sunday, March 15, the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau today gave T-Mobile 60-day special temporary authority to use additional spectrum in the 600 MHz band to augment its broadband service. This decision came as part of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s Keep Americans Connected Pledge initiative in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Since then, 185 broadband and telephone providers have agreed to not terminate service to any residential or small business customers because of their inability to pay their bills; waive late fees incurred due to economic circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic; and to open its Wi-Fi hotspots. Viasat and Hughes have also signed on to the pledge.
