[Via Satellite 10-17-2016] Skybridge, a maritime mobile network provider, has launched a Voice Over IP (VoIP) app called VoiSea that enables users to access free voice, HD video calls and messages at sea or in other remote locations, while keeping bandwidth consumption to a minimum. The app targets settings mainly in maritime but also in land and aviation where congested cellular or satellite networks challenge the use of bandwidth-intensive VoIP apps.

According to Skybridge, VoiSea can reduce consumption to as low as 8Kbps and still support fast messages and calls. Additionally, should a user wish to call a number not supported by the app, they may purchase credit directly through the App Store or Google Play. VoiSea has no requirement to handle SIM cards for mobile phones, or activation codes, prepaid cards or vouchers for sale on board. The app can also function as a means of internal ship communications, reducing the need for traditional Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) phones.

“The advent of High Throughput Satellites (HTS) will no doubt help these markets to offer increased Wi-Fi speed. However, given the massive rise in data demand, we believe that VoiSea will bridge the considerable gap that exists in cellular coverage today,” said Constantin Simeonidis, president and CEO of Skybridge.
