[Via Satellite 08-25-2016] Optus is adding satellite-enabled small cells to 12 remote, but frequently visited locations in Australia’s Northern Territory. The small cells, when coupled with satellite connectivity/backhaul, can provide concentrated mobile broadband coverage for rural, remote and previously unserved locations.

Optus reported success in trialing and proving the small cell technology in harsh conditions at Oodnadatta in remote South Australia. The small cells deliver mobile phone coverage up to a 3-kilometer radius, depending on the surrounding topography.

Optus plans to locate the small cells between selected locations from Katherine to Uluru along the Stuart Highway, key roadhouses and popular check-in locations including Daly Waters, Renner Springs, Three Ways, Barrow Creek, and Erldunda.

Additionally, the operator has selected locations such as Curtin Springs on Lasseter’s Highway that have no existing mobile coverage.
