[Via Satellite 05-08-2015] SES and Samsung demonstrated a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) in High Dynamic Range (HDR) Ultra-HD earlier this week at SES’ Industry Days event. According to SES, the broadcast was the first to show how industry can launch new HDR Ultra-HD TV services with DVB broadcast networks while simultaneously providing such broadcasts to Ultra-HD Phase 1 receivers already in the market. SES transmitted the broadcast from one of its satellites at 19.2 degrees east using existing DVB Ultra-HD Phase 1 specifications and BBC Research & Development’s HDR technology directly to a Samsung SUHD-TV.
“An introduction of any HDR technology must be backwards compatible with existing DVB UHD 1 Phase 1 flat screen TVs that are already in consumers’ homes. SES and Samsung, with this transmission over the Astra satellite system, are demonstrating that this backwards compatibility is possible today,” said Thomas Wrede, VP of reception systems at SES.
