[Via Satellite 06-18-2014] Gilat Satcom launched a new system to provide high-quality voice connectivity for the underground mining sector in Africa. Traditional communication methods in underground mines once consisted of temporary coax cables, which are often easily damaged in a mine. Gilat’s SuricatePro system provides coverage for standard satellite phones, extending telephony underground without loss of quality to the signal.

The system uses Foxcom’s Radio Frequency (RF)-over-fiber technology, and customers can connect with their Iridium satellite phones underground with the SuricatePro service once outdoor and indoor units connected via fiber (up to 6 km) are installed.

In creating the SuricatePro system, Gilat adapted a similar system targeted at underground bunkers in the military, while accounting for the often harsh conditions found in mines.
