[Via Satellite 06-13-2014] Work Microwave will now feature Carrier Identification (Carrier ID) technology according to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s (ETSI) TS 103 129 standard, with its Second Generation Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite (DVB S2) modulators and modems. This capability will help satellite operators comply with the new Digital Video Broadcasting Carrier ID (DVB CID) standard prior to mandatory deadlines.
The company’s DVB S2 modulators and modems with DVB CID technology will also help operators more quickly identify and eliminate sources of interference, in turn helping to reduce operating expenses. DVB CID is the first international standard to define a digital satellite transmission system for CID. The standard uses a spread spectrum carrier transmitted with the host carrier, with reduced power spectral density. DVB CID was published in May 2013 as ETSI TS 103 129 “framing structure, channel coding and modulation of a carrier identification system (DVB CID) for satellite transmission,” and will become mandatory through the United States’ Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Requirement 25.281 by June 1, 2016.
The DVB CID signal is a narrowband signal beneath the main transmission, at a level between negative 17.5 and 27.5 dB. It does not affect the quality of the transmission, and uses a Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) spread spectrum modulation, differential encoding, scrambling and a concatenated error protection strategy based on repetition, Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and BCH codes. It allows operators to quickly identify interference sources by repeatedly carrying the modulator’s Global Unique Identifier, along with user-definable parameters such as Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates or a phone number.
