[Via Satellite 06-10-2014] Measat and Newtec are scheduled to deliver a satellite transmission of 4K Ultra-High Definition (Ultra-HD) television video distributed via the new extension to the second generation Digital Video Broadcast Standard-Satellite (DVB S2X) transmission standard. The broadcast will take place at the CommunicAsia show between June 17 and June 20 in Singapore. The feed will be uplinked through Measat’s teleport in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur and delivered live in C-band over the Measat 3 satellite, using Newtec’s DVB S2X modulation equipment.

The DVB S2X standard was developed by the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) consortium, of which Newtec is a member, and was published in February 2014. The new standard reaches efficiency gains over the second generation Digital Video Broadcast Standard-Satellite (DVB S2) of up to 51 percent for professional applications and up to 20 percent for Direct-to-Home (DTH). Other additional capabilities include lower Roll-Offs (RO), increased granularity in Modulation and Coding (MODCOD) choices, more efficient modulation for use in linear and non-linear operations and a standard mechanism to bond carriers together.

“This demonstrates not only that satellite networks are ready for 4K Ultra-HD TV, but also that DVB S2X is ready to help satellite operators and broadcasters cut costs or deliver more content within the same capacity,” said Steven Soenens, VP product and market management at Newtec. “It is no longer a question of whether the new DVB S2X standard will be used in broadcast contribution and distribution networks, but rather a question of when.”
