[Via Satellite 03-11-2014] Comtech EF Data and Pakistani satellite system integrator and service provider Supernet Limited have successfully migrated the entire 2G TDM satellite backhaul network to a fully IP-optimized backhaul solution to support current 2G/2.5G and future 3G operations of a leading mobile network operator in Pakistan. This migrated satellite 3G network can carry more than 500 Mbps of voice and data traffic, and will be carried out simply enabling the optional IP Packet Processor of Comtech EF Data’s CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem with DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier. The migration does not increase the satellite bandwidth and is fully able to maintain the service quality.

All of the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Pakistan have used satellite for their core backbones’ primary links and for access links to extend 2G/2.5G service coverage into rural and remote areas. Currently, the total mobile backhaul traffic carried over multiple C- and Ku-band transponders is approximately 1.5 Gbps. With the recent preparation to launch 3G services in densely populated urban areas, the traffic volume is expected to more than double.

“Comtech EF Data’s cutting edge, bandwidth-efficient solution coupled with Supernet’s exceptional system design and integration capabilities have resulted in virtually zero increase in OpEx for the MNO,” stated Hamid Nawaz, COO of Supernet. “We believe that the other MNOs can leverage our experience to achieve this all important milestone on their growth path to a 3G ready network.”
