As DirecTV attempts to acquire Hulu, an online video service provider, the satellite TV provider is also making a push to secure Over-the-Top (OTT) rights from cable channels and other programmers.
The OTT distribution model allows subscribers to receive TV content over the Internet without any need for a set-top box. Additionally, OTT rights could help DirecTV and cable companies compete with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and other video streaming services. The model could also help television providers extend their traditional reach, attaining new customers and compete in regions typically dominated by one provider.
