[Satellite TODAY 07-05-13] The International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) has recently reached a new worldwide agreement BT.2020 on the technical parameters of Ultra High Definition (UHDTV) television. This agreement sets the parameter values for UHDTV production and international program exchange. Under this agreement, the television sets needed to watch in UHDTV are expected to begin entering the market in the coming months.

To respond to this announcement, the Forum for Advanced Media in Europe (FAME), an initiative led by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Digital Interoperability Forum (DIF) with the support of the European Commission, brought together in Geneva a cross-industry group of executives and specialists from broadcasters, consumer and professional electronics manufacturers, satellite operators and national HD forums. Together, this group of experts analyzed the barriers and keys to success will be for UHDTV in Europe with the objective of plotting a course for UHDTV in Europe, and sharing knowledge and experience across the continent.

The U.S. Consumer Electronics Association took part in the meeting, and colleagues from Japan and Korea, where interest in UHDTV is similarly high similar groups are under consideration, joined the group remotely.
