[Satellite TODAY 05-31-13] Global satellite operator Telesat has announced that Axesat, a provider of VSAT services in South America, has signed a long-term contract for capacity on Telesat’s new Anik G1 satellite.

The Anik G1 is a multi-mission satellite that began commercial operations earlier this month and is now providing communications services across the Americas. Co-located with Telesat’s Anik F1 satellite at 107.3 degrees west, Anik G1 effectively doubles both the C-band and Ku-band capacity serving South America from this orbital position.

“The full continental coverage of Anik G1 using a single Ku-band beam provides operational efficiencies to Axesat that gives them an edge in delivering the very latest in satellite broadband performance to their customers,” Nigel Gibson, vice president, international sales for Telesat, said in a statement.

“With the power and coverage of Telesat’s Anik G1, combined with the advanced capabilities of our terrestrial infrastructure, Axesat is well positioned to continue offering the highest levels of broadband performance for our corporate customers and build on our leadership position in the region,” Mauricio Segovia, president, Axesat, said in a statement.
