The government of Belarus has made it illegal to install satellite antennas on buildings around the country. Under the new regulation, users wishing to install a new dish antenna for receiving satellite television will need a permit from local authorities.
According to reports, the regulation on satellite reception would appear to be aimed specifically at Belsat TV, a Poland-based satellite television channel intended to provide alternative content to Belarusian state-run television.
However, the order seems to be specifically targeted at residents of apartment buildings and not of private houses, and it doesn’t appear to affect the equipment that has already been installed.
According to the latest public opinion survey conducted by Zerkalo-Info, an independent center for sociological surveys, approximately 1.76 million people in Belarus own a satellite dish, and 53 percent of satellite TV viewers in the country say they watch Belsat TV programs.
