[Satellite TODAY 05-08-13] Astrium Services has enhanced its hybrid communications network offering for mining companies operating in remote areas. The service improvements follow an extension of Astrium Services’ MPLS capabilities through a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Paris.

A company operating an iron-ore mine and office in Guinea and facilities in London, is Astrium’s first customer to benefit from the extended MPLS capability by ensuring satellite connectivity between production sites and hybrid satellite/terrestrial connectivity to the U.K., via the new PoP in Paris. Combining the extended MPLS connection of Astrium Services with satellite services, the company can deliver high-speed connectivity, which supports optimized mining operations.

“The MPLS extension secures Astrium Services’ ability to provide single Wide Area Networks to our mining industry customers, combining services across our own teleports, including the possibility to integrate C-, Ku- and Ka-Band solutions,” Danny Cote, head of business communications – enterprises, Astrium Services, said in a statement. “We can integrate VSAT and terrestrial services to deliver the ideal competitive package for customers seeking flexible and manageable, international private networks. Hybrid networks based on MPLS mean customers can communicate across global sites as if they were connected to the same local switch, and be confident that should there be an issue with their connectivity, they can come to us for expert support on all parts of the network.”
