[Satellite TODAY 02-21-13] Hispasat’s Amazonas 3 satellite has started its systems, deployed its solar panels and begun its in-orbit test phase, the operator confirmed.
The satellite reached its geostationary orbit one week after its launch aboard an Arianespace Ariane 5 ECA and deployed its four communications antennas. Amazonas 3 will be taken to its final orbital slot at 61 degrees West following the successful completion of in-orbit tests and will remain under the supervision of Hispasat technicians.
The new Space Systems/Loral-built satellite aims to provide advanced telecommunications services, dissemination of TV platforms and deployment of corporate fixed and mobile telephone networks, broadband or integrated solutions for telecommunications operators. The spacecraft is equipped with 52 simultaneous transponders – 33 Ku-band, 19 C-band and 9 Ka-band beams.
The Ka-band payload makes Hispasat the first operator in Latin America to offer Ka-band services to the region.
