According to research and analysis firm IDATE, Liberty Global acquisition of Virgin Media is an example of the internationalization path of the pay-TV market.

“Pay-TV is nearing saturation in the world’s more developed TV markets. The emergence of new OTT video services on televisions and other connected devices increases the threat of cord-cutting. For a great many pay-TV providers in the West, emerging markets therefore represent vital sources of future growth,” says Florence Le Borgne-Bachschmidt, head of the TV & Digital Content Practice at IDATE.

The number of TV households worldwide will reach 1.544 billion by 2017, according to IDATE; an increase of 9.1 percent in 5 years.

With an expected penetration of 554 million households by 2017, cable will remain the primary source of television. However, IDATE foresees that satellite and IPTV will gradually gain ground, accounting for 32.1% and 8.6% of TV households, respectively, at the end of 2017.
