[Satellite TODAY 12-21-12] The Australian national broadband network (NBN) builder faces potential problems of delivering high-speed services to remote regions the current interim satellite arrangement’s popularity rises, AAP reported Dec. 21.

Australians in remote and rural areas are using the satellite for and broadband speeds of up to six megabits per second (Mbps) download/one Mbps upload.
According to NBN Co Chief Mike Quigley, demand for the interim service is already ahead of projections, and if take-up continues, there will be a gap between the capacity available and the 2015 launch of the satellite.
To avoid this potential problem, NBN Co aims to look at providing the full interim service before the launch of the two satellites, valued at $620 million half a year apart in 2015.
"There is a very limited amount of (satellite) capacity over Australia for broadband service," said Mr. Quigley. "We have already bought a large chunk of what was available."
