[Satellite TODAY 11-06-12] Dish Network reported a total revenue of $3.52 billion during its 2012 third quarter, compared with the $3.60 billion it recorded in its 2011 third quarter, the company announced Nov. 6.
Dish Network experienced a third quarter net loss of $158 million, compared to its 2011 third quarter $319 million in net income, due to the negative impact on net income by $453 million from the recent settlement of the Voom litigation. Without this event, third quarter net income would have reflected an eight percent decline from third quarter 2011 at $295 million.
Other factors contributing to the net income decline include higher programming costs leading to higher subscriber-related expenses as well as a 12.7 percent increase in gross subscriber additions, increasing subscriber acquisition costs.
Dish Network ended the quarter with approximately 14.042 million subscribers, a 19,000 net subscriber decrease for the third quarter, compared to last year’s net subscriber loss of about 111,000. ARPU for the third quarter totaled $77.57, improving from $76.99 in the 2011 third quarter.
"We have continued to balance focused acquisition efforts against our need to contain programming costs," Dish CEO and President Joe Clayton said in a statement. "Our year-over-year subscriber trends indicate that we are on the correct path."
