[Satellite TODAY 10-19-12] Mitsubishi Electric’s new maritime broadband satellite communications product has been awarded Type Approvals after extensive testing by satellite industry non-profit Global VSAT Forum (GVF), Mitsubishi announced Oct. 19.

The GVF Product Quality Assurance Framework, established by the international satellite industry to improve earth station technology design and performance, provided the Type Approvals to Mitsubishi. The testing was based on the rigorous Eutelsat and Intelsat satellite-operator specifications and the award demonstrates Mitsubishi’s ability to provide high-quality Ku-band transmissions via a 1.2-meter Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) designed for use onboard maritime vessels.
“Mitsubishi Electric’s new product is an important breakthrough for the maritime broadband marketplace,” GVF Secretary General David Hartshorn said in a statement. “The type approval tests show that their VSAT product has been designed to provide a high standard of service in challenging maritime operating conditions.”
GVF testing for Mitsubishi Electric outsourced Earth station type-approvals testing services through a mutually-recognized test framework and an industry-authorized network of testing entities. GVF’s testing through its Mutual Recognition Arrangement Working Group (MRA-WG) is relied upon by key global and regional satellite operators.
