[Satellite TODAY 10-11-12] ATK has awarded components and subsystems provider Emcore with a contract to manufacture solar panels for the Amos-6 commercial telecommunications satellite, the companies announced Oct. 10.
The Amos-6 spacecraft will be powered by solar panels with Emcore’s ZTJ triple-junction solar cells. Amos-6 is being built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and operated by Spacecom. The satellite is scheduled to launch in early 2015 before co-locating to the 4 degrees West orbital position with Amos-2 and Amos-3. Amos-6 aims to provide Pan-European and Middle East coverage with steerable Ku-band and African and European broadband service with a Ka-band beam.
“We are excited about this opportunity to adapt our space-proven modular PUMA array, from GPS 2F and Orbital’s Star2 GEO line, to provide power to IAI’s AMOS-6 satellite for Spacecom,” ATK Vice President and General Manager Dave Messner said in a statement. “We look forward to delivering over 10kW of end-of-life power using Emcore’s solar cell technology to enable another successful satellite mission.”
