[Satellite TODAY 08-28-12] Canadian satellite broadcast equipment manufacturer Advantech Wireless has released a 20-Watt GaN X-band and C-band block up-converter (BUC) suited for harsh environments such as man-pack terminal deployments, the company announced Aug. 28.

The manpack terminal features a lightweight, small-size frame and high-power BUC that is available in X-band or C-band configurations. The integrated unit comes complete with power supply, phase-locked oscillator, mixer, filter and a cooling mechanism that weighs less than 5 lbs.
“These new BUCs deliver more power per square inch than anything else in the market. Advantech Wireless is a pioneer of GaN-based High Power Amplifiers,” Advantech Vice President of Product Line Management and Business Development Cristi Damian said in a statement. “Within the same footprint, GaN allows us to double the RF power and reduce energy consumption by up to 70 percent. For government and military application, this means that batteries last longer and mission-critical video, voice and data get delivered.”
