[Satellite TODAY 04-23-12] Norwegian pay-TV provider Viasat Broadcasting reported that its premium pay-TV subscriber base in the Nordic region fell by 19,000 in the first quarter of 2012 to a little more than one million subscribers, the company confirmed April 20.

Viasat Broadcasting’s total basic satellite subscriber base, however, rose by 4,000 customers to 42,000. The company’s Viasat-Plus satellite value-added services grew its subscriber base slightly from 188,000 customers in the first quarter of 2011 to 191,000 subscribers in the most recent quarter. Its Multiroom and HD services ended the quarter with 251,000 and 313,000, respectively.
Viasat Broadcasting’s parent company Modern Times Group (MTG) said the fall in the premium pay-TV subscribers was due to the expiration of one of the group’s virtual operator contracts with a Norwegian IPTV operator following its acquisition by a cable company.

MTG added that a restatement of its subscriber base by another Norwegian IPTV operator also contributed to the subscriber decline.
