[Satellite TODAY 03-05-12] Satellite service provider Belgium Satellite Services (BSS) has signed a contract with Mumbai-based Indian teleport operator Lamhas Satellite Services to bring Indian channels to Europe via Eutelsat’s Eurobird 9A satellite, BSS confirmed March 2.

BSS, formerly the satellite division of Belgacom, offers a range of services via the Eutelsat platform located at the 9 degrees East orbital slot. “This partnership with Lamhas Satellite Services will bring cost-effective delivery of Indian channels to Europe,” BSS CEO Nitin Dhawan said in a statement.
Separately, the European Union has moved its broadcast information services EbS and EbS+ to the Eurobird 9A satellite. The two channels are uplinked to Eutelsat 9A by P&T Luxembourg, whose services were recently selected following an open call for tender by the European Commission (EC).

The EC said the move to the 9 degrees East orbital slot provides both services with access across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and into European parts of the Russian Federation. “The EbS signals also will be upgraded to DVB S2 and MPEG4 with audio channels encoded using AAC-HE. The combination of DVB-S2 and MPEG4 was chosen to take utility of the coding techniques in use on Eutelsat platforms,” EC officials said in a statement.
