[Satellite TODAY Insider 12-01-11] Viewing on tablet devices is beginning to cannibalize the viewing of video on PC and TVs. This was one of the main findings of Orange Exposure 2011 — an annual independent study by TNS into mobile media habits across the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Poland commissioned by Orange. Orange released findings from the research Nov. 30.
The increased use of tablet devices to view content could have an impact for DTH operators, which, by and large, remain the main providers of video services across Europe. Orange says that according to this survey, “There is now evidence to suggest that tablet devices are actually cannibalizing home TV viewing and PC usage.” For example, it says in the United Kingdom 35 percent of tablet users are watching on-demand content, 40 percent are watching streaming content and 39 percent are ‘watching TV’ on their tablet. In France, the report says 19 percent of users say they watch more TV as a result of their mobile media usage. The research also shines a light on how mobile media habits impact other media formats.
“This is the first time we have included tablet usage in the Orange Exposure report and the findings are quite stark in their description of how people are using devices. Clearly the one size fits all approach for digital content across TV, PC, smartphone and tablet does not work and this has significant implications for content producers and advertisers,” Bruce Hoang, Group Marketing Director, Orange Advertising Network, said in a statement.
Many DTH operators are already looking to cater for this new market, and have their services available on tablets and other devices. Oleg Kolesnikov, Technical Director, NTV+, the leading Russian DTH operator, said the operator is enhancing its offer on new devices. “Over the last year, we have been involved in a number of test projects. We have involved a number of different devices for the projects such as iPhones, iPads, smartphones, etc. At the moment, we think things are not yet ready to make these services available to everyone. We can’t guarantee quality of service if we are using third party networks. But, we will see. With the development of mobile operator’s market, with new services such as LTE, these services will become much more available to customers.”
Vivek Khemka, Vice President of Consumer Technology, Dish Network (United States), admits it is a challenging time for DTH operators to serve across all these new devices. “While we want to offer a seamless experience to the consumer, it gets very challenging when you are looking across multiple platforms. If someone came up with a universal specification and said this works across multiple platforms, that would be great, but I think we are many years away from that,” he said.
