ViaSat is releasing its silicon-proven cores ECC66100 series as standard off-the-shelf products in an effort to develop forward error correction (FEC) for 100G optical transports, the satellite company announced Sept. 12.
ViaSat said the new technology was designed to produce cost savings over optical compensation techniques, increase optical channel capacity, and extend the range of transmission for optical cables.
“ViaSat proprietary soft-decision coding, with scalable overhead up to 20 percent, improves performance in metro and long haul applications by providing up to 11.3dB net electrical coding gain. The FEC core is optimized for 100 Gbps data rates and is scalable to 40 Gbps or beyond 100 Gbps, and easily adapts to higher order modulations and OFDM,” ViaSat said in a company statement.
