[Satellite TODAY 08-23-11] U.S. satellite pay-TV provider DirecTV has entered into a partnership with Sony that will allow customers to stream DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket programming package to Sony PlayStation 3 video game consoles, the companies announced Aug. 21.
The deal represents the first time DirecTV has made its exclusive NFL football rights available to non-subscribers on a non-mobile, television-connected device. DirecTV’s subscription costs for the entire NFL season will be set at $339.95 a year.
DirectTV said the partnership is part of its new initiative to migrate more customers to Internet-connected viewing. The deal follows a rough 2011 second-quarter for the cable and satellite industry, when six of the top U.S. companies lost a record 580,000 video subscribers due to competition from cheaper online video streaming services. DirecTV attracted 26,000 net U.S. satellite subscribers during that period.

DirecTV added that it is open to future partnerships to integrate the service on other video game and wireless devices.
