[Satellite TODAY 10-20-10] Boeing has shipped LightSquared’s SkyTerra 1 high-capacity mobile communications satellite from the company’s integration and test complex in El Segundo to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Boeing announced Oct. 19.
The satellite will undergo final preparations for a Nov. 14 launch aboard an International Launch Services Proton rocket.
Boeing designed SkyTerra 1 based on its 702HP platform. The satellite will work with four gateway ground stations and ground-based beam-forming equipment to create the first of two space-based networks that Boeing is building for LightSquared. SkyTerra 1 also features a 22-meter L-band reflector-based antenna.
LightSquared will use the network to roll out its wholesale 4G-LTE wireless satellite/terrestrial broadband service in the United States.
