[Satellite TODAY 10-18-10] Digi International has released the Digi m130 embedded dual-mode modem module, which aims to allow device manufacturers to integrate cellular, GSM/GPRS, GPS and Orbcomm satellite connectivity with their products, Digi announced Oct. 15.
Digi said the modules are the result of technologies it acquired after the company purchased Q52 Omni Technology from Sierra Wireless earlier this year.
Available for $169, The Digi m130 delivers wide-area networking connectivity and is being targeted to fleet management and asset tracking applications. The unit features on-board GPS for location tracking and geo-fencing as well as the company’s satellite application-specific integrated circuit ASIC technology.
“Featuring both cellular and satellite connectivity allows customers to develop fleet management solutions that can easily switch from one network to another. As a vehicle moves out of cell range, it can then use satellite to maintain connectivity. This combined with GPS functionality allows organizations to track their products to within 5 meters of accuracy virtually anywhere on the planet.”
Digi said its m130 customers also will have access to its iDigi cloud computing platform for machine-to-machine network management by the second quarter of 2011.
