[Satellite TODAY 10-05-10] Astrium has acquired German space sensors and optical systems specialist Jena-Optronik, Astrium announced Oct. 4.
    Jena-Optronik develops attitude sensors and space-based optics for a variety of different platforms, including Earth observation satellites and the laser guidance system for the European International Space Station supply vessel, ATV. The company will remain independent under Astrium and maintain its individual brand.
    In a statement, Astrium Satellites CEO Evert Dudok said the acquisition aims to enhance his company’s reputation in the development and production of sophisticated Earth observation satellites. “The acquisition of Jena-Optronik will ensure that Astrium continues to provide our institutional and commercial customers with a variety of high-quality optical systems and meet the growing demand for advanced EO satellites. The German government invests considerably in observation satellites, and we are proud to further develop our industrial competences in this field.”
    Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
