[Satellite TODAY 09-10-10] Via Embratel, a subsidiary of Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicacoes, has deployed Entropic Communications’ Channel Stacking Switch (CSS) technology to deliver direct-broadcast satellite entertainment services to consumers’ homes via a single cable wire infrastructure, Via Embratel announced Sept. 9.
Entropic’s CSS technology aims to support multiple tuners over a single cable, enabling easy plug-and-play set-top box upgrades, and reaching potential new subscribers previously unserviceable due to access limitations or wiring restrictions.
Via Embratel said this technology is critical to its business as many Brazilian multi-dweller units (MDU) only have DBS access via a single coax line, where the cost difference for adding or upgrading DBS service into an apartment is substantial.
Via Embratel plans potential next phases of deployment, including expansion beyond the MDU market to the single-family home segment by combining Entropic’s CSS technology with Multimedia over Coax Alliance-based home networking silicon, which enables streaming multiple high-definition video, audio and data traffic throughout the home.
