[Satellite TODAY 08-10-10] EchoStar Corp. reported a 57.4 percent increase in its 2010 second quarter revenue over the same period in 2009 at $603 million but suffered a net loss of $41 million, the company announced in its latest financial results, issued Aug. 9.
EchoStar blamed the net loss on a 48 percent increase in expenses, spending $571.7 in operating costs during the quarter. The company generated a net income of $101.8 million in the same period a year ago.
EchoStar CEO and President Mike Dugan said the company spent more money than usual in the second quarter to break into the European cable TV set-top box market and launch new satellites for its sister company, Dish Network.
Dish Network, which reported a 9.1 percent increase in revenues at $3.17 billion, also lost about 19,000 subscribers during the quarter, finishing with a total of 14.3 million subscribers.
The U.S. pay-TV provider also generated a net income of $257 million, compared with $63 million during the corresponding period in 2009.
