[Satellite TODAY 07-01-10] L-3 Telemetry-West has been contracted by Orbcomm to upgrade its satellite control center for the Orbcomm Generation 2 (OG2) program, L-3 TW announced June 30.
The control center will be powered by L-3’s InControl software product, designed to support satellite fleet on-orbit operations and provide core command and control functions for both Orbcomm’s original fleet as well as the new OG2 satellites scheduled for launch between the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011.
The OG2 SCC upgrade program will include 29 existing satellites and a minimum of 18 additional OG2 spacecraft. L-3 said the delivered control center can support more than 75 satellites and expects Orbcomm’s existing fleet of 29 satellites to be operational with InControl in the fourth quarter.
“The versatility and ability to seamlessly integrate L-3’s InControl system into our existing [control center] will allow Orbcomm to continue our efforts to improve existing satellite performance and prepare for the upcoming OG2 launches,” Orbcomm Executive Vice President John Stolte said in a statement.
Financial details of the upgrade contract were not disclosed.
