It would be hard to classify the economic mood in the Asia-Pacific region as a rebound, since many communications sector executives have maintained that the area never suffered that much from the global turndown. But either way, the economic recovery that is taking a small hold in some areas of the globe looks likely to have an impact in the Asia-Pacific markets as well — provided end user customers are willing to come along.

Companies along the satellite communications value chain enjoyed a successful week in Singapore in terms of customer interaction — and even some orders. But there was a note of caution coming from the ultimate users of the capacity and equipment, beginning with executives from HBO Asia and Sony Pictures Television Networks sounding less than excited to jump into HD offerings because of the lack of a solid case for return on investment.

There is a lot of potential in the communications markets in the Asia-Pacific — traditional TV broadcasting, maritime services, cellular backhaul and others all look to continue their strong performance or become a new revenue area. But it looks like it will take some energy and patience for the satellite communications sector to cultivate some of the revenue streams that are out there.
