[Satellite TODAY 06-18-10] Vizada has activated a voice-over-IP (VoIP) connection on its network to offer reduced cost of shore-ship communications via Inmarsat FleetBroadband terminals to its shipping customers, Vizada announced June 16.
Shipping companies that use Vizada’s Inmarsat FleetBroadband service require a VoIP-compatible PABX telephone server at their premises to make voice calls. Vizada said it can configure its infrastructure to route VoIP calls over its network to the terminal on board ship. Once in place, all voice calls to Inmarsat FleetBroadband terminals are transited via VoIP, in order to reduce costs for the shipping company.
“This is a really interesting way of saving money on calls to FleetBroadband terminals. Many of the major shipping companies that use our services make very frequent calls from shore to ship and they stand to benefit a great deal from this," Director of Vizada Solutions Reinhold Lueppen said in a statement.
