[Satellite TODAY 06-18-10] Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSB) has successfully transitioned its Thor 3 satellite from its previous orbital location of 1 degree West to a new location at 4 degrees West, a position for which TBS holds a filing for BSS frequencies, the operator announced June 17.
The satellite has been placed in inclined orbit and is expected to provide an additional 6 to 10 years of commercial operations. The maneuver aims to establish TBS’ inclined-orbit operations for satellite services in the Middle East. The operator said it plans to initiate commercial operations from the satellite soon.
TSB said it concluded that the satellite was no longer required at 1 degree West either to support services or to provide operational flexibility following the transition of traffic from Thor 3 to Thor 6. As a result, the company decided to move the satellite to 4 degrees West, an orbital position for which it holds a filing for BSS frequencies.
