[Satellite TODAY 06-08-10] SES Astra signed a satellite broadband deal with Polish data network operator Nask to extend the operator’s reach into Poland, SES announced June 7.
SES will provide its satellite-based broadband Astra2Connect service to Nask’s business customers in the Polish market. The Astra2Connect service aims to enhance Nask’s enterprise broadband services suite, which includes Internet access, corporate networking, data transmission, hosting, videoconferencing and network security services, with speeds of up to 4 megabits per second. The service will also be made available to customers in remote regions where terrestrial broadband networks are limited or non-existent.
“We are very pleased to have entered into this agreement, which will enable us to extend the scope of our wireless services beyond the major Polish cities to the entire country. SES Astra is an expert in the field of satellite communication. Due to the obvious advantages of the offered solution and the positive results of our quality tests, we are convinced that we have chosen the right partner,” Nask Director Michal Chrzanowski said in a statement.
Separately, SES announced June 4 that it would be reconfiguring its orbital assets over the next five years to increase the available capacity of its fleet by 30 percent. The initiative comes as the operator also plans to reduce the number of satellites in the fleet from 43 to 38.
SES said its fleet renewal and expansion program investment would peak in 2010 at 820 million euros ($1 billion) and then decline sharply.
