[Satellite TODAY 05-14-10] Liberty Global is teaming with Samsung, Intel, NDS and Nagravision to build a multimedia home gateway for its digital TV customer base, LGI announced, May 12.
The multimedia home gateway, scheduled for deployment in Europe in the first half of 2011, is an IP platform capable of distributing video, voice and data content throughout the home and to multiple video displays. Samsung will build the multimedia home gateway, which will be powered by the Intel atom CE media processor. The middleware and the user experience will be provided by NDS based on flash technology. Nagravision will provide the conditional access solution through Nagra Media Access.
In a statement, Austar CEO John Porter said the gateway could provide benefits for operators. “We are very excited about the progress that is being made in the international consumer media space by our parent company, [Liberty Global], and will be watching closely as this incredible product develops. There is, of course, potential for us to develop a product of this scale for our customers, but we are currently hamstrung by the lack of retail broadband competition and the fundamental lack of affordable wholesale broadband services in our market.”
